Lore
Vodyanoy is a Hostile water spirit most often reported at slow river bends, millponds, and shaded oxbows. As a field archivist I record it as an impression more than a body: an oily darkness that distorts light, the sense of something twice-submerged moving just beneath the surface. Smell: a wet, green rot—algae, old reeds, and a faint metallic tang like deep river mud. Sound: low, rhythmic bubble-chanting, the creak of submerged timbers, and sometimes a muffled splash that comes without wind. Temperature: an abrupt, clinging cold that steals heat from skin and air within a few paces of the bank. Encounters are best logged quietly; witnesses describe the spirit as an absence that presses outward, not only a figure that can be struck.

Field Notes
Observations
- A ring of steady bubbles far from wind, reed beds lying oddly still, and waterfowl avoiding a patch of surface.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not wade or swim alone at dusk or in murky, stagnant stretches. Avoid whistling over still water, which local lore says provokes attention. Travel in daylight, keep to shallow margins, and do not lean too close to undercut banks.
- defense: If confronted, put distance between you and the water—retreat to higher, dry ground. Keep iron or a length of oar/wood as a barrier and a rope for retrieval. Create bright light and noise to break the atmosphere of calm the spirit favors; throwing a sacrificial bait (bread or fish) toward the bank can distract it long enough to escape. Never attempt to grapple the current alone—rescue requires anchors and teammates.
- offering: Small offerings left at the water's edge—bread, smoked fish, or coins—are traditional means to placate the spirit and may reduce curious or territorial behavior.
Abilities
- Abyssal AnchorFires a kelp-like tether that latches to a victim, hauling them into deep water while siphoning body heat and fragments of memory.
- Command of the CatchOrders fish and water-beasts to foul nets, gouge hulls, or swarm chosen targets to ruin a haul or an enemy's balance.
- Foam of False HearthConjures scummed foam that mimics domestic smells and voices to lure fishermen, boats, or children toward hidden shallows.
Weaknesses
- Consecrated IronContact with iron burns his watery flesh and disrupts his enchantments, forcing retreat or pain.
- Church Bell TollThe ringing of church bells or displayed icons drives him back into the deepest waters and breaks many of his manipulations.
- Bound to BargainWhen presented with an accepted offering or formal pact (e.g., the first catch), he is honor-bound to refrain from harming the giver until the bargain is broken.
