Lore
Wulbari and Ananse appear as a paired phenomenon: Wulbari the high, luminous sky-deity and Ananse the lithe, clever spider. In the field one senses two registers at once. Smell: clean ozone and distant rain high above, layered with warm earth, frying plantain and the faint nutty tang of kola where stories are spun. Sound: a slow, resonant thunder-bell from the heights (Wulbari), underscored by the quick, dry skitter of many legs and a sharp, knowing chuckle (Ananse). Temperature: a clear vertical gradient — an incisive, star-cold at the crown of the scene, and a sun-warmed, tactile closeness at ground level; together they feel like dawn condensing into laughter. Notes written in a Field Naturalist tone: observe where the light faults and where webs catch it — the pair mark the landscape in contrasts rather than a single shape.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, immaculate spiderweb suspended against open sky — dew beading like tiny stars — or a patch of air that chills as if the heavens drew breath.
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Never claim ownership of the sky, never loudly challenge thunder, and do not pluck or scatter the first dew-hidden threads you find; such affronts are taken personally by Wulbari.
- reverence: Salute the dawn with a quiet offering: a broken kola nut, a small libation of palm wine, or a spoken naming of the day and its stories. A respectful recounting of an old tale keeps the balance between sky and storyteller.
- mischief: Ananse delights in literalizing metaphors, twisting bargains, and leaving riddles folded into ordinary tasks; bargains signed in jest may be enacted with relentless, annoying precision.
- interaction: Speak plainly in bargains, answer riddles with care, and expect pedantic, cunning re-interpretation. Offer a story, a sweet roast plantain, or kola; show wit and humility — Ananse prizes cleverness but punishes vanity through embarrassment or elaborate practical jokes.
- offering: Kola nut or small portion of palm wine; a tale told aloud (preferably an old one), roasted plantain or a neat handful of roasted groundnuts.
Abilities
- Web of StoriesAnanse spins a living web that captures names, tales and bargains so the pair can replay, trade or bind memories as currency.
- Sky-Seal of WulbariWulbari can pull stars and sunlight into a celestial vault, blinding or sheltering regions and enforcing any oath sworn beneath that dome.
- Bargain of Thread and SkyAnanse crafts a contract in silk-thread and Wulbari seals it across the heavens so breaking it causes targeted unraveling of fate or weather.
Weaknesses
- Public NamingIf every lie or stolen tale of Ananse is publicly enumerated and witnessed at a communal gathering, his Web of Stories frays and loses potency.
- Earth-Rooted IronDriving an iron stake into a central web-node planted in consecrated earth severs Ananse's weave and forces Wulbari's sky-seal to contract for a lunar cycle.
