Lore
Yee Naaldlooshii is a hostile spirit tied to famine and the deepest cold, often described in old accounts as a gaunt, hunger-driven presence that haunts snowbound places and lonely trails. In the field it announces itself through temperature first: a sudden, bone-deep drop in warmth as if heat is being drawn from the air. Smell: a metallic, iron-tinged tang carried on a dry winter wind, with undertones of stale earth and frozen breath. Sound: distant, hollow rasping like wind through empty wood, occasional scratching at stone or bark, and an uncanny mimicry of human cries that can lure the unwary. The overall effect is incorporeal and arresting—an oppressive chill, the echo of absence, and an urge toward isolation or reckless hunger among those who encounter it.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, localized plunge in temperature combined with erratic, too-deep tracks in snow that seem to begin without origin and the faint sound of a hollow rasp or mimicry.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not travel alone in affected terrain. Keep to daylight and populated routes; maintain visible, sustained fire or light. Resist isolation and do not follow unfamiliar cries. If you sense desperation or unnatural hunger, withdraw calmly toward community and shelter.
- defense: Use sustained light or fire as barrier and signal; create distance and retreat to inhabited places. Make loud, continuous noise to break mimicry and disorientation. If cultural guidance is available, seek elders or medicine people for appropriate ritual support—do not attempt improvised rites.
- offering: None recommended. This spirit is associated with insatiable hunger; attempting to appease it alone is unsafe. Seek community leaders or traditional practitioners for culturally appropriate counsel.
Abilities
- SkinshiftTakes on the exact form and scent of a stolen animal hide to assume that creature's body and senses instantly.
- Luring VoicePerfectly imitates the voice of a loved one or neighbor to draw victims into isolated places.
- Shadow RunTraverses great distances by slipping along animal shadows and trails, reaching targets far faster than a normal runner.
- Witch-BindingWeaves persistent misfortune and sickness into a household through supernatural means and long-term malediction.
Weaknesses
- Secrecy ReliantStories consistently show its power depends on secrecy and anonymity; public exposure or accusation strips many of its influence.
- Stripped DisguiseWhen deprived of its stolen pelts or revealed in true form, it loses much of its shapebearing and must retreat to recover.
- Name TabooTraditional accounts warn that the creature is bound up in taboos surrounding its naming and reputation; narratives treat direct naming as dangerous to discuss.
