Lore
Zemlya is a Deity tied to the living soil—an elder presence felt more than seen. In field notes she is described as the slow patience of clay and root: the smell of damp loam, peat, and crushed leaf; the sound of a deep, distant rumble like settling stone and the faint susurrus of roots grinding; a temperature that is steady and cool at the surface with a hollow, subterranean warmth beneath. Approaches are marked by a heaviness in the air, motes of mineral dust that glint in sunlight, and plants that lean as if listening.

Field Notes
Observations
- A tell-tale sign is a sudden, low subterranean throb accompanied by a sharp scent of turned earth and the appearance of a shallow, circular rise in the soil where no mound stood before.
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Do not take earth without asking or strip a hill of its roots; never toss blood, metal, or flames into raw soil in her presence. Desecration of springs, graves, or elder trees is specially forbidden.
- reverence: Leave a small circle of bread, fresh water, and a clod of earth at the base of a standing stone or ancient tree; speak a brief thanks aloud and plant a cutting or seed in return. Speak her name softly if you pass a newly turned field.
- offering: Fresh river water, a lump of clean earth, newly baked bread, or a sapling set into the ground—simple, living gifts that return to the soil.
Abilities
- Mother's Buried EmbraceZemlya swallows intruders into living soil that coils like hands, binding and suffocating or slow-stoning those taken beneath the earth.
- Fertile Boon of the FurrowBy touching a field with her damp palm she forces seed to sprout overnight, but the gift exacts a land-bound oath from the beneficiary.
- Root-Memory DivinationShe reads the record kept in roots and stones, revealing ancestral sins, buried bargains, and the true names of places.
Weaknesses
- Consecrated Iron PloughshareA ploughshare forged of iron and blessed in Christian rites can cut through her animate clay-forms and wound her avatars.
- Tolling of the Church BellThe sustained ringing of a church bell combined with formal Christian prayers drives her outward manifestations from settled villages.
- Stripping the TopsoilLong-term removal and exhaustion of topsoil through relentless extraction or industrial quarrying erodes her local power and presence.
