Chaneque Lore & Origins

Chaneque is a diminutive fae recorded at hearth and river-edge: childlike silhouettes that blur between root and smoke. Their presence smells of wet earth and crushed moss, like a riverbank after rain; they announce themselves with high, tinkling laughter and the soft scrape of tiny feet or nails on wood; and they bring a persistent, cool dampness — a close, shadowy chill that makes a hearth feel just a degree colder. Field notes note the uncanny feeling of lost warmth, the sudden sliding of small objects, and the echo of a voice that is almost, but not quite, a familiar one.

Chaneque Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • The surest sign is the sudden disappearance or misplacement of small items (keys, buttons, shoes) paired with tiny damp footprints near the hearth or riverbank and a faint childlike laugh at dusk.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Typical pranks include hiding or swapping small household items, leading travelers in circles near water, mimicking a loved one's voice to confuse night-walkers, tangling hair or laces, and subtle rearrangements of domestic objects. Mischief usually aims to test attention or demand exchange rather than harm.
  • interaction: Approach with calm respect and clear terms. Do not attempt to capture or threaten; return taken items or offer a modest trade. Speak plainly (they notice bargains) and leave a small token at the hearth or river-edge. If lost in their territory, sit quietly and wait rather than force a path — patience and a small offering often resolve the situation.
  • offering: Small tamales or corn, a cup of cacao, tiny carved toys or wooden trinkets, colored ribbons, or a coin left at the hearth or beneath a favored root.

Chaneque Abilities & Powers

  • Shadow-Snatch
At night the chaneque plucks an individual's shadow or vital wisp, producing progressive weakness and memory lapses until the stolen essence is returned or bargained for.
  • Pocketing of Possessions
Conceals or relocates small personal items—keys, combs, tools—in impossible places and sometimes forms a private hoard from its spoils.
  • Trail-Fold
Bends local paths and river-sides to mislead travelers, causing familiar routes to loop or vanish until the chaneque's mischief is resolved.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Chaneque

  • Iron (nail, blade, or shard)
Direct contact with iron pains chaneques and forces them to release stolen items or flee the immediate area.
  • Returned property
Restoring a victim's specifically stolen object often breaks the bond the chaneque used and ends its influence.
  • Refusal of bargains
Refusing to bargain or trying to coerce them publicly can provoke vindictive escalation but also prevents long-term attachment.
