- Concentric ripples that move oddly against the current and a line of small coin-like scales or polished stones washed up on the bank.
- behavior: Primarily solitary and patient: ambushes fish and crustaceans, basks in shallow current, and hoards shiny objects and carved beads. Many legends say it strives to become a true dragon (yong) over long centuries; it is curious but avoids unnecessary conflict, defending itself only when cornered or provoked.
- interaction: Approach with quiet respect from the bank rather than entering the water. Keep movements slow, avoid splashing or sudden light. Leave offerings at the edge (see offering) and observe from a distance; if the Imugi withdraws, give it space and do not pursue.
- offering: A shallow bowl of clear water and plain white rice on the riverbank, or a smooth green stone (jade-like) left without ceremony.
Imugi Abilities & Powers
- Yeouiju BindingBinds a fallen yeouiju (dragon orb) to its brow to complete—sometimes instantaneously—its metamorphosis into a true dragon and to momentarily channel the orb's wish-granting might.
- Thousand-Year TranscendenceAfter a long, uninterrupted lifespan (traditionally a thousand years), its coils unravel and it permanently ascends into a dragon, gaining far greater power and dominion over weather and rivers.
- Mist WreathSummons dense river or mountain mist to cloak its size, confuse travellers, and stealthily relocate to secluded pools or caverns.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Imugi
- Orb TheftIf the yeouiju is removed or stolen the Imugi's ascension is halted and it is left weakened or trapped in torpor.
- Interrupted LifespanViolent death or forced disruption before its century/thousand-year milestones prevents metamorphosis and scatters its vital essence.
- Sacred Salt & RitesShamanic rites and lines of purified salt can repel, bind, or bar an Imugi from sacred pools and thresholds.
