Jengu

Jengu is a water spirit venerated as a deity by the Sawa of the Cameroonian coast. In the estuary where I first recorded local testimony, the presence manifests like a small pocket of winter air beneath a hot sky: the temperature drops to a damp, clammy cold at the shoreline. Smell: a sharp, saline brine underscored by a delicate floral perfume—often described as the scent of crushed riverine blossoms or sweet palm oil. Sound: a cadence of soft, distant bells and a layered chorus of tiny bubbles clicking against one another, punctuated by a low, human-like hummed phrase that seems to answer songs sung from the bank. The overall impression is of something incorporeal and patient, more like a tidal memory than an animal — cool, luminous, and attentive.
