Noppera-bō

Noppera-bō is a trickster yōkai encountered on lonely roads, riverbanks, and in the dim rooms of inns. Field notes: a human silhouette that, when watched closely or when a witness is startled, smooths into a featureless face like linen stretched over bone. Smell: a faint, cold odor of river mud and old paper, as if it carries the damp of unlit tents. Sound: the soft, hollow hush of footsteps that stop an instant before your own, and then nothing—no breath where a face should be. Temperature: a definite drop, clammy and thin, like walking into a shadowed doorway. Approach slowly; its trick is spectacle rather than savagery, designed to unmoor rather than to strike.
