Qalupalik

Qalupalik is a Hostile (Monster): a cold, shore-bound sea-woman told in Arctic coastal communities. Field notes: her presence reads like a shoreline in winter — the air tight with salt and old kelp. Smell: a sharp brine, with undertones of damp seaweed and driftwood. Sound: a low, wet wheeze and the faint, slippery scraping of fingernails on rock; sometimes a thin, sing-song lullaby carried on the breeze. Temperature: markedly colder than the surrounding air, a glassy chill that makes breath rim and skin prickle as if standing beside a floe. Close observers report hair standing, an instinctive tightening of the small ones at their side, and a hush among birds and seals.
