Waldgeist is a Fae—an old forest spirit that inhabits stands of oak, beech, and mixed ancient wood. In the field it announces itself subtly: the air grows damp and noticeably colder, leaf litter arranges in small, deliberate patterns, and a soft, wood-rasping susurrus answers any sound you make. Smell: clean loam, crushed fern, resinous sap and the faint, sweet musk of decaying leaves. Sound: a low creak of trunks, tiny twigs clicked together like a tongue, and distant, childlike laughter that never quite resolves into a shape. Temperature: an unmistakable chill that clings to the skin—moist, breathable cold rather than biting frost—often accompanied by beads of dew forming on exposed surfaces. Observed behavior is deliberate and slow; encounters feel like the forest itself taking a careful breath.

Generally indifferent to passersby but will intervene if its domain is harmed or treated without respect. When provoked it prefers trickery—misleading paths, misplaced footprints, or the slow unravelling of a traveller's bearings—rather than outright violence.

Leave a small, natural token (acorns, seeds, braided grasses) at the base of an ancient tree and step back to observe. Speak softly if you must; sudden movements or bright, reflective objects can alarm it. If shown respect, a Waldgeist may guide a lost person to a safe trail or allow passage through its grove.
