Yumboes Lore & Origins

Yumboes are small nocturnal fae often described in coastal and dune habitats; field reports place them at roughly knee-height, wrapped in white cloth and moving with an uncanny, deliberate lightness. Smell: a salt-tinged breeze folded with warm earth and a faint scent of smoked fish and jasmine. Sound: a chorus of high, bell-like laughter, soft drum rhythms, and the faint metallic tinkle of anklets or shells. Temperature: their presence cools the air by a few degrees — not biting cold but the kind of chill that follows shade and the hush of night. Observers note precise, ritual movements and a tendency to gather at the waterline after sunset.

Yumboes Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • Freshly arranged offerings at the edge of the dunes or small, pale footprints in moonlit sand that seem to vanish at the tide line.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Yumboes are playful and contractual: they borrow or swap small items (buttons, utensils, shoes), mimic voices to lure the curious into watching their dances, and may rearrange camp supplies as a prank. Their mischief is rule-bound — they delight in bargains and are quick to collect on unstated debts.
  • interaction: Approach quietly and respectfully. Leave a modest offering (see 'offering') at the waterline or a stone altar, step back, and wait. Never grab an item they present without first placing something of value in return. Accept invitations to observe from a distance; joining their circle without permission can offend. Respect the exchange — they honor reciprocity and clear terms.
  • offering: Fresh fish or small portions of cooked millet, polished shells or beads, silver coins or small mirrors, and a tidy pile of fragrant herbs. Simple, sincere gifts accepted at the tide line work best.

Yumboes Abilities & Powers

  • Moonlight Banquet
Summons an otherworldly feast visible only by moonlight that entices nearby humans to join and momentarily share memories of the host's household.
  • Silvery Vanish
Fade into shimmering, translucent form and slip back into underground hollows or the silvered night in an instant.
  • Obliging Servitors
Perform attentive household tasks or entertain guests through song and dance for those who leave suitable night offerings.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Yumboes

  • Sunlight Dispersal
Direct daylight forces them to lose cohesion and retreat below ground until night returns.
  • Withheld Hospitality
When customary nocturnal offerings or feasts are stopped, they withdraw their presence and favors from a household.
