Hewi-Yooku Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
- A crescent of disturbed reeds and a line of paired, shallow, webbed prints that begin and end at the water's edge.
- behavior: Primarily nocturnal and territorial along streams and oxbows. It patrols a single stretch of water, investigating reflections and small disturbances. Generally avoids open ground and will withdraw into submerged tangles if given space. Becomes defensive if cornered or if its nesting root-mat is disturbed.
- interaction: Approach slowly and low to the ground at the water's edge; do not block its channel. Offer a small, river-smoothed stone or a live freshwater fish placed at the margin and step back. Avoid sudden movements and direct lunging; if it bares its teeth or emits a long, hollow bark, retreat calmly and give the bank back to it.
- offering: A small, river-polished stone, a length of blue thread tied around a twig, or a single freshwater fish left on the bank.

- Braided Cattail CordA cord of three freshly braided cattails wound around Hewi-Yooku's reed-mask pins it inert for hours.
- Recital of True NameSpeaking a victim's true name back to them while blocking the mask forces the stolen breath to return and breaks the bind.
- Sunlight and Dry EarthDirect, unbroken sunlight or setting its feet upon dry, clay soil causes the reed-mask to crumble and the spirit to retreat.
