Knocker Lore & Origins

Knocker is a Fae — a small mine spirit recorded by Cornish and later Anglo‑American miners. In the low, lamplit world of workings it announces itself as deliberate percussion: taps that ring off timber and vein like a tiny hammer. Smell: a cold, mineral tang — wet earth, faint tin or copper, and the oily Ghost of lamp smoke. Sound: crisp, measured knocks that can answer a pick, scatter a pile of stones, or skitter away as if something small ran along timbers. Temperature: the air around the sound often feels noticeably cooler, a breath of underground draft that raises the hackles. Field notes: knocks arrive in patterns and with temperament — helpful when stocks of ore are nearby, petulant when rules are broken, and playfully tricky in abandoned galleries.

Knocker Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • A repeating, rhythmic series of knocks that shift in perceived distance (near then far) — often accompanied by a sudden, cool draft and small, rearranged stones.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Moves or hides small tools, mimics the sound of a pick to lure miners toward a seam (or toward a dead end), nudges markers, and sometimes answers questions with a count of knocks. Their tricks follow a rulebook: jesting rather than malevolent, but liable to cause confusion if mocked or ignored.
  • interaction: Approach with steadiness and respect: speak plainly, keep a light, and do not taunt. If the knocks guide you, mark the passage and work carefully — the Knocker’s help often points to ore or an unstable area. Return taken items to a predictable spot rather than chasing or shouting; they prefer transactions to confrontations.
  • offering: A small, simple token left on a ledge — a scrap of cloth, a coin or tin token, a pinch of salt, or a drop of lamp oil — offered silently and with thanks.

Knocker Abilities & Powers

  • Tommyknock Warning
Produces deliberate rhythmic raps on timbers and rock that miners interpret as warnings of impending roof collapse or as signals pointing toward rich veins.
  • Tinker Theft
Secretly pockets or relocates small tools and provisions to chastise greed or to compel offerings and attention from miners.
  • Stonewhisper Guidance
Modulates knock patterns into subtle sequences that, when correctly read, guide miners to paystreaks or hidden lodes.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Knocker

  • Sunlight Exposure
Direct daylight disperses and silences them, forcing knockers back into deep workings where their influence wanes.
  • Iron at the Shaft
Iron bars, nails or a forged iron token placed in the shaft entrance repel or bar their entrance to a working.
  • Salt Line
A line of coarse salt drawn across a tunnel threshold stifles their knocks and prevents passage.
