Langsuir

Langsuir is a hostile vampiric spirit recorded across Malay and Indonesian oral tradition. Field notes describe a hollow, humanoid silhouette often glimpsed at dusk among coconut and palm stands: long, unbound hair, a thin, swaying gait, and clothing that hangs like wet fabric. Smell: a sudden, unnerving scent of frangipani (plumeria) folded over a faint metallic tang. Sound: a high, keening wail that can mimic a newborn's cry or a woman's sob, carried in fits on the night breeze. Temperature: the air drops several degrees where she passes—damp, clammy cold that raises the skin and beads dew on exposed surfaces. The overall impression is of something incorporeal and relentless rather than bestial; it leaves no tracks but takes careful note of human vulnerability.
